BAU was founded in 2004 in Viareggio, on the coast of Tuscany, by a group of artists and individuals interested in the many-sided aspects of the culture of our times. Thanks to a widespread and constantly expanding network of contacts, every year the project takes the shape of an expressly designed UniA4 sized box: BAU container of contemporary culture. This non-profit box is produced in a limited edition of 150 copies (120 for issue 1 and 200 for issues 9-10) and contains original works, signed and numbered, from a large number of international contributors.
The BAU container fits in the vast tradition of assembling publications and artists‘ magazines that developed since the early sixties. It intends to experiment with new languages, technologies and materials, operating in a peculiar dimension of group work that is open also to contributions from non-artists: outsiders, travellers, collectors of curiosities, creative gastronomers, anomalous scientists.
In a relational and non competitive perspective that is responsive to the relationships between art and science, politics and environment, BAU acts as a meeting point in order to stimulate dialogues, interactions and exchanges among the most diverse disciplines: graphics, collage, photography and the visual arts in general, but also poetical and narrative researches, acoustic and performative experiences, documents pertaining the fields of fashion and design, etc. The operative network expresses itself also through the planning of exhibitions, meetings, festivals and events, organized in institutional spaces (libraries, galleries, museums) and in atypic locations.

Reinhard Grüner is a collector from Monaco. His passion is art books, which he collects – and sometimes exhibits – since the 1960s.
His website, www.buchkunst.info is a real “online museum”, where international artist books are catalogued and photographed. Amongst the artists there are Marc Chagall, Anselm Kiefer, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Books, but also works of art made of images and text, created by the artist often in collaboration with a writer and a publisher. For the high artistic quality – original graphics, unique designs, paintings and collages – these works are different from the usual picture books. Their manifestations are multiple: books with graphic effects, objects-book, artist’s books, sometimes printed in offset or illustrated by works of artists.
At the centre of Grüner’s attention there are Eastern German and Eastern European books (mainly Russia, Hungary, Lithuania). many of these works were created in response to specific social, political and cultural issues, with unimaginable insights into the culture of modernity.
Reinhard first came in contact with the art in book form with the English Edition, printed privately, of “A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig”, printed in 1975 by Shoestring Press on paper of the legendary Chiswick Press: from here begins a life of a book maniac among thousands of books. As Grüner states in an essay, the acquisition of artist books is more than a simple purchase: the artist, the life as a collector and thoughts are tied together, they influence each other, and a network of contacts with other collectors begins. With nearly all the books in his collection Grüner forms a symbiotic relationship: each of them describes, explains, and gets to the heart of some chapters of his life.

The philosopher Karl Popper called in 1945 for an open society “in which one can breathe and think freely, in which each person has a value, and in which the society exerts no unnecessary pressure on the individual”. In the 1960s and 1970s a new generation of artists began to replicate works of art in the form of artists’ books, magazines, newspapers, small multiple objects, postcards, graphic posters or audio cassettes. These were sold for a small fee or exchanged internationally with artist colleagues, disregarding all political frontiers, from Eastern Europe to Latin America. An international network was thus formed via the post, enabling artists to circumvent the censorship of their work. This was the genesis of so-called Mail Art. Everyone could participate, nobody was excluded. there were no juries and no censorship. A societal vision in accordance with that envisaged by Karl Popper was apparent in the dehierarchisation and the democratisation of art. The exhibition shows works from the archive of the Dutch artist Kees Francke, who would have celebrated his 65th birthday this year, supplemented by works from other archives that help to form a picture of the networks though which these artists were interconnected. The project began in 2013 with a series of conversations with representatives of various fashion brands including G-Star, O’Neill, gsus sindustries, Rockwell by Parra, Converse, moniquevanheist, and Nike. These companies then contributed by donating clothing and footwear in the form of samples, archival pieces and stock. Denken, Praktizieren, Vernetzen – eine Debatte zur Zugänglichkeit von Performancekunst in der Schweiz, das von PANCH, dem Performance Art Network Schweiz organisiert wird, fragt vor allem aus einem künstlerisch motivierten Standpunkt heraus nach dem Stand der Dinge in der Schweiz, wofür gezielt sowohl internationale als auch nicht-künstlerische Positionen, Erfahrungen und Lösungsansätze in den Blick genommen werden. Unter anderem möchten wir wissen, wie sich Performance als lebendiges Ereignis angemessen archivieren lässt und was der Umgang mit dokumentarischen Materialien (haptisches Archiv) für die Überlieferung bedeutet. Asphalt enthält in der Oktober-Ausgabe exklusiv die Namen aller ausstellenden KünstlerInnen der kommenden weltweit berühmten Kunstausstellung documenta 15 und ebenfalls exklusiv Beiträge des Artistic Teams der "documenta fifteen": Dahinter steckt das Kollektiv, mit indonesischen Wurzeln, ruangrupa (übersetzt: visueller Raum), welches die Praxis des lumbung umsetzt. lumbung ist indonesisch und bedeutet gemeinschaftlich genutzte Reisscheune. In einem System der Unterdrückung, wie es in Indonesien seit Suharto in der jüngeren Geschichte der Fall war und es immer noch ist, entstanden Plattformen, um Kunst möglich zu machen. Innerhalb des Kollektivs ruangrupa besteht das Kollektiv Serrum und Grafis Huru Hara; Kollektive innerhalb eines Kollektivs, so muss man sich auch die Dynamik und Philosophie der 15. documenta vorstellen.

In dieser Novemberausgabe finden sich als documenta Bezug drei Seiten über "majelis akbar". majelis bedeutet Versammlung. Es gibt Mini-majelis und in diesem Fall gab es eine viertägige große majelis - die majelis akbar. Dabei dokumentieren sogenannte Harvester (to harvest - ernten) den Prozess des Treffens. Täglich waren etwa 130 Teilnehmende im Gespräch. Die Versammlungsdokumentation des "Harvester" Sheree Domingo ist auf einer Doppelseite abgebildet.

Die vierte Ausgabe des Buffer Fringe Festivals wurde unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Charalambia Theophanous organisiert und fand zwischen dem 08.-11.11.2017 in der Altstadt von Nikosia statt. Das Festival fand an verschiedenen nicht-theatergebundenen Orten und öffentlichen Plätzen statt: in Garage, am Faneromeni-Platz, am Selimiye-Platz, am Arasta-Platz, am Bedesten und im Bandabulya.
Alle Aktivitäten im Rahmen des Festivalprogramms waren öffentlich, für alle zugänglich und kostenlos. Das Publikum hatte die Möglichkeit, insgesamt 14 einzigartige Darbietungen aus verschiedenen Genres zu genießen, darunter Tanz, Theater, Musik, Malerei und Installationen. Zusätzlich zu den 7 lokalen Darbietungen aus ganz Zypern kamen auch 7 internationale Darbietungen aus Spanien, Deutschland, Irland, Japan, dem Vereinigten Königreich und Griechenland hinzu. Heute gibt es eine Kunstbewegung, die auf dem Kunstaustausch basiert. Es handelt sich um ein planetarisches Netzwerk von Tausenden von Künstlern, die Kunst miteinander austauschen und Kommunikationsmedien als Kunstmedien nutzen (Post, Telegrafie, Telex, Telefax, Telefon, Computer, etc.). Dieser Kunstkreislauf ist wahrscheinlich die größte Kunstbewegung, die es in der Geschichte der Kunst je gegeben hat. Und sie wächst jeden Tag weiter... Dieser Kunstkreislauf wird üblicherweise Mail-Art Network genannt, weil das Postsystem meist als Austauschmedium genutzt wird. Dennoch gibt es nicht "das eine" organisierte Netzwerk. Jeder Mail-Art-Künstler oder Tauscher hat seine eigene Mailing-Liste, die seinen (kleineren oder größeren) Kreis umfasst. Wenn jemand von "DEM" Netzwerk spricht, meint er alle diese (sich überschneidenden) Kreise zusammen.

Heft zu einem Projekt der beiden Mail-Art Künstler Ruggero Maggi und Hans Braumüller, deren Austausch bereits 1992 entstand und bis heute besteht. Ein Beispiel dieser Zusammenarbeit ist das vorliegende Heft "Meta + Verse", in dem sich die Künstler ihre Kunst hin und her schickten und nach dem Prinzip der Mail Art - Hinzufügen, Verändern, Zurückgeben - in die Arbeiten des anderen intervenierten. Das Heft versammelt die Kunstwerke, die aus diesem Mail Art Poetry Uninversum hervorgegangen sind, entstanden aus Freundschaft und im Sinne des gegenseitigen Austauschs und Dialogs.

Katalog zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung, die vom 04.04.-20.04.1995 in der Galeria Posada del Corregidor in Santiago de Chile stattfand. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Mail Art-Projekt des Malers Hans Braumüller, der 168 Künstler*innen aus 27 verschiedenen Ländern darum bat, ihm beim Malen zu helfen. Indem er Fragmente seiner Gemälde international verschickte, verband er nicht nur seine Interessen - Malerei und Mail Art -, sondern schuf ein transnationales Kunstwerk im Sinne der Mail Art und des Transfers vom Persönlichen zum Kollektiven. Die verschiedenen bearbeiteten Fragmente stellte er anschließend in Santiago gesammelt aus.
