It will trace the different spaces granted to English through the first thousand years, from stray notes scratched into Anglo-Saxon herbals or fragments of lost medieval songs in the margins, to masterpieces placed centre-page and framed by illustration and illuminated borders. it will cover both books and other objects, from grisly tombs to charms written on food.
