Am weitesten ins "Erzählerische" strebt Dirk Sommer. Seine Bildgeschichten kommen serienweise daher. Sie besitzen eine Mischung aus verspielter Nonsens-Naivität mit witzigen Trivialmomenten und gekonnter Verve des Bildaufbaus. Ursprünglich waren seine Großformate nicht etwa immer rechteckig, sondern zischten wie explodierendes Blei am Silvestertag in durchaus unkonventionelle Umrißformen. Als echter Hödicke-Schüler zieht Sommer keine Bremsen, wenn die bildnerische Phantasie mit ihm durchbrennt. Die vielen kleinen und großen Hasen, Palmen, Sonnenscheiben, Gestirne, Untertassen, Zahlenreihen, Tische, Häuser usw. usw., sgraffiti-artig und mit wütender Kontrastfarbe ins Bild gesetzt, Leuchtspuren auf dunklem oder Brandspuren auf hellem Fond, vermitteln die Welt als Abenteuer zwischen Donald Duck und Science-Fiction. Irgendwie muß wohl auch die Patternkunst einen gewissen hintergründigen Einfluß auf einige der Garage-Künstler ausgeübt haben. Man sieht es am deutlichsten bei Petra Seelenmeyer und Michael Meyer. Diese sehr amerikanische Variante künstlerischer Felderoberung aus den siebziger Jahren mit mehr oder weniger dekorativer Wirkung, gerät hier in einen Gegenstandsbezug, in abermals erzählerische Effekte hinein. Besonders im Fall Petra Seelenmeyer erinnern die einzelnen Motive an Puzzle-Teile aus eckig-zackig-kantigen und sanft gerundeten Formen. Sie schwimmen auf dem reichgetönten Untergrund, verzahnen sich mit ihm zu lyrischen Landschaften von leicht elegischer Stimmung. Die Picknick-Serien zum Beispiel, ein herausgehobenes Kapitel der letzten beiden Jahre, aber auch die Seerosen und die Tulpenbilder, gewinnen den träumerischen Charakter im Zwischenfeld von Nacht und Tag. Helligkeits- und Dunkelheitswerte werden mit großzügiger Handschrift schattiert, die einzelnen Gegenstände mit kräftigem Pinselstrich umrandet, wie Wolken an deren Rändern sich Finsternis und Sonnenstrahlen brechen. Bei Michael Meyer gibt es das Puzzle nun direkt und handgreiflich. Rohe Kistenbretter, unscheinbare Fundstücke wie alte Holzteile, Pappen und Kunststoffabfälle liefern ihm das Ausgangsmaterial für seine ungewöhnlichen Materialarbeiten. … (Vorwort)

The EP is called ´Das Ende von Amerika´ (The End of America) and it´s dis.playce´s second release on naivsuper. The title refers to the book ´Amerika´ by Franz Kafka and should not be interpretated in the wrong way)
´Amerika´, also known as ´Der Verschollene´ or ´The Man Who Disappeared´, was the incomplete first novel by Franz Kafka, published posthumously in 1927.
The story describes the bizarre wanderings of a sixteen-year-old European emigrant named Karl Rossmann in the United States, who was forced to go to New York to escape the scandal of his seduction by a housemaid.
Hope originates when something else is absent and holes need to be filled again. The purpose of hope is to make itself vanish again and to reach a state of mind where Utopia or the promised land of North America won´t be needed anymore.
Kafka puts his hero Karl Rossmann over and over again in situations where he is lacking something only to discover that he is lacking even more. The spiral of hope, disappointment and reproaches seems to be endless. With ´Amerika´ Kafka finishes a series of America-fiction from the 19. Century which glorified the United States as the land of boundless possibilities. For Kafka America is not the solution of our problems anymore, it is almost like a second Europe - a land where the problems stay the same.

For several years, Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have organized evenings for friends in which they share the strangest photo books in their collections. The books shown are rarely available in regular shops, but are picked up in thrift stores and from antiquaries. The group’s fascination for these pictorial non-fiction books comes from the need to find images that exist on the fringe of regular commercial photo books. It’s only in this area that it’s possible to find images with an uncontrived quality. What’s noticeable from these publications is that there’s a thin line between being terrible and being awesome. This constant tension makes the books interesting. It’s also worth noting that these tomes all fall within certain categories: the medical, instructional, scientific, sex, humour or propaganda. Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have made a selection of their finest books from within this questionable new genre.

The origin of this work of self-fiction can be found in one of São Trindade’s sketchbooks, this one entirely devoted to the subject of loss or decadence. With references to the aesthetics of crime scenes and nightlife photographed by Weegee in New York in the 1930 and 1940’s, the device is simple: in a "real décor," São Trindade’s body, abandonned and unconscious, is photographed. The body is always the same but differently ‘prepared’ and ‘composed’ with new dresses, new gestures, new signs of a recent activity or a different personality. Each image has its particular story and each space is a sounding board for each of these performative states of body.

The Nabokov Paper is an experiment in novel-reading. The project takes as its starting point a now famous class taught during the 1950s by Vladimir Nabokov at Cornell University, New York State, entitled Literature 311-312: Masters of European Fiction. Nabokov’s approach to teaching literary reading was notoriously idiosyncratic. Convinced that one must teach the books themselves, not ideas or generalities, Nabokov would make diagrams of the floor plans of fictional buildings, map the routes taken by characters through the spaces of the novel, and draw items of clothing or furniture, he would also propose to track the course of a single letter, offer a visual representation of a stylistic device, and uncover what he called the mysteries of literary structures. His methods are striking for the range of gestures they call for in the name of good reading. The published Lectures on Literature (New York: Harcourt, 1980) concludes with an appendix of sample exam questions. Responding to those questions some sixty years after the fact offers a means to explore what Nabokov’s take on how to read might have to teach us today: about the novel, about how reading works across practices and disciplines, and about the past, present and future forms of literary criticism.

From the beginning of the series in the 70s to his retirement in 2007, Ballestar created almost one thousand striking scenes in his preferred medium watercolour, giving the adventures of John Sinclair their unmistakable graphic character and certainly greatly contributing to its cult status. In the horror detective fiction series, published weekly since 1973, Scotland Yard chief inspector John Sinclair is the eponymous protagonist of the German pulp fiction written by Helmut Rellergerd under the pen name Jason Dark.

Postkarten zur Ausstellung Attack of the 50 FT. Woman vom 10.09.-22.10.2016 in Frankfurt a.M. Ein Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung bilden die neuen „Schachteln“. Hier klebt Sauerer auf einen Schachteldeckel ein Foto und zeigt im sich daneben befindenden Schachtelinneren die Figuren, die auf dem Foto zu sehen sind. Die Motive reichen vom aktuellen NSU-Prozess mit Beate Tschäpe über den 1958 gedrehten und Ausstellungstitel-gebenden Science-Fiction Film „Attack ot he 50 ft. Woman“ bis weit zurück in die Kunstgeschichte. So sind Motive von Piero della Francesca („Die Geisselung Christi“) und Caspar David Friedrich Vorlagen für Peter Sauerer. Die Figuren sind in ihrer feinen Ausarbeitung erkennbar. Auf nicht einmal einem Zentimeter gelingt es dem Künstler, die Figuren zu personifizieren.

Individually and collectively written texts by the participants intertwine with guest contributions by companions who have been involved in the experiment in various ways. This book considers itself to a lesser extent as documentation of this experiment’s history but rather as a medium of visualisation of the mutual learning process.
The educational and artistic research program Survival Kit was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD through the programme “Partnerships with Greek Institutions of Higher Education 2014 – 2016”.

This book aims to collect and present a comprehensive overview of the work of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt. It is the result of a long and intense immersion into her archive, and intends to establish the importance of this unique artist – who did not have much recognition in the past – not only to the present day, but also to the precise political context and time to which she and her work belong.
The book presents her typewritings series, all produced between the early 1970s (some of the earliest works are dated 1972) and 1989.
Mail Art was her way to be in contact with the world outside the GDR, otherwise impossible to reach. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Reunification, the artist stopped producing any art: She felt her involvement was no longer “needed”.
At the beginning of 2015 we started to archive Ruth Wolf- Rehfeldt’s work, discovering little by little an enormous and fascinating body of work, composed by more classic poetry, simple typewriting texts, visual poetry, concrete poetry, and abstraction.

A reflection about the status of the image as a balance of forces in tension and a paradoxical act of cancellation of the body through its own representation. In Ion Grigorescu’s work, as in the book, the body is continually shown in different ways - from photography to film, from performance to drawing - and yet it remains absent, obscuring its own identity in an attempt to question the collective one. As it is impossible to show his art during the regime, it ends up hiding, disappearing inside the image. Instead of showing, the image conceals, because it is non-documentary and non-transmittable. it is an act of birth, a prove of the artist’s resistance, especially as a human being inside (or against) any geographical or historical background. In the rituals of his gestures and in the symbolism of his performances, Grigorescu finds a way to stay alive, preserving his own intellectual status while also defending the dignity of everyday life. The book traces the progression, both expansive and inclusive, of his work, which inscribes itself into the space of the body and of the world. Grigorescu absorbs elements of the surrounding reality, showing us a continuity between art and life: his act of dissidence is not an outcry of provocation, nor is it extreme. it is an anti-aesthetic operation which uses experimentation and rough techniques to uncover the fiction of art, to denounce the artifice of representation and to affirm images as an instrument of subversive power.

Das System scheint korrupt und die Alternativen kaputt. Es war Albert Camus, der 1951 schrieb, die Rebellion "entreißt den Einzelnen seiner Einsamkeit", sie ermögliche eine allen zugängliche Wirklichkeit – so war zumindest die Idee. Auch Kanye West beansprucht die Position des Rebellen. Nur eskaliert heute jeder für sich. Für ein Gemeinsames scheint es keine überzeugenden Bilder mehr zu geben, keine Vision und kein Projekt. Die Rebellen von heute schleusen uns in Filterblasen, die nebeneinander existieren. Aleen Solari, Andrzej Steinbach, Felix Thiele und Steffen Zillig arbeiten bevorzugt mit Fremdmaterial, Fotografien und Videos. In ihrer Ausstellung suchen sie nach dem, was von der Zukunft übrig geblieben ist: Science-Fiction.
