"A Set of Lines, A Stack of Paper" is the second in a series of exhibitions and publication based on a wide-reaching research about writing with the title 'Possible Content for 18 Pages'. The original typewritten manuscript of Vilém Flusser's essay 'The Gesture of Writing' provides the thematic and formal-aesthetic foundation for reflecting the act of writing at the intersection of linguistic, visual, physical and spatial communication. 'To write,' says the philosopher about the basic requirements that should lead to a complete piece of writing, we need 'a blank surface, for instance a white leaf of paper, an instrument which contains a matter that contrasts with the whiteness of the paper, the letters of the alphabet, the convention which gives a meaning to the letters, 'orthography' = correct writing, the rules which order that language, what is called 'grammar', an idea to be expressed in a language, and a motive to express that idea'. Understanding the act of writing as a culturally embedded gesture, 'A Set of Lines, A Stack of Paper' covers artistic, literary, as well as curatorial and editorial fields of action and combines them. The book is published on the occasion of the correspondent exhibition at KARST, Plymouth (June 5 - July 5, 2015). The publication comprises an exhibition documentation with installation views and a curatorial statement. Furthermore, the author Maria Fusco situates the concept of the exhibition in an actual context of literature.
The participating visual artists expand the topic of the exhibition with artistic contributions especially made for the book.

Rex Reason presents the Periodic Table of the Elements in book form. A colour-coding system is set up (black for solids, blue for liquids and yellow synthetics) but where we might expect to find hydrogen, helium or lithium we find Yul Brynner, William Hogarth and Maria Callas. The selected names relate to the chemical symbol for each element: both letters must appear in the chosen name for example, Bertolt Brecht (Br, Bromine).

This booklet—with a graphic design that resembles a school notebook from the 50s—was created to accompany an exhibition at Larada by Adrien Missika, a young Parisian artist based in Geneva. In 2004, Missika set out on an original “grand tour” that skipped all the monuments and glorious ruins of Europe and took him instead through the peripheral neighborhoods of various Old World capitals, from Milan to Moscow. The result was Einfühlung (2008): a series of low-resolution, cell-phone photos of impressive Collectivist architecture, a legacy of the Modernist social utopias. Images of this work and others, including Grand Prix (2008), a video in which dromology meets archeology, and Daily Archeology (2010), serve as photographic references for the critical text by Patrick Gosatti.

'say cheese', 'please laugh', 'show your smile' - this is what people usually say, when they take a private picture of their friends or family. These pictures normally remain in the private sphere of the photographer and are only shown to a selected audience. For this conceptual and experimental photo-series such private images have been forcefully appropriated: individual prints have been taken randomly from drug stores and photo developers, the pictures where selected and then set in relation to others. The negatives of these images were not taken. Unlike the concept of the objet trouvé, where found objects and materials are the basis for creative work, the images used in this project are objets appropriés, they have been actively taken rather than found. They are documents of other peoples memories, memento mori of their existence, beautiful in their own right. By blurring and distorting them, the concept of remembering and forgetting, documentation and memory is questioned.

It contained propositions for small interventions in public space in Weimar. These propositions function as a written proposal: in relation to Lawrence Weiner's “Declaration of Intent“ the interventions do not need to be executed but can be read as a manual and performed by anybody. In 1926 Max Ernst published a portfolio of prints entitled 'Histoire Naturelle’ (34 collotypes published by J. Bucher, with an introduction by Hans Arp) which were based on experiments using the technique of frottage (or rubbing) and depict a kind of mysterious, natural world of strange and fantastic landscapes, rocks, or creatures emerge from experimental procedures but give the precision of scientific illustrations.
Arnaud Desjardin purchased one of these very rare portfolios, drawn to it by the fact that it was damaged by a purple fungus which had been eating away at the paper. He saw a strange beauty given by the mould, adding to the original textures in true, surrealist style. He set about creating a 'new' work which is ‘Mouldy Modern’, featuring both the original Ernst plates and mould- in equal measure- to magical effect!

He was dancing steadily. He could see the backs of people’s heads moving in the darkness and was aware of the shifting spaces between their bodies. He did not register the music except as a sort of vibration. He felt as if he was dancing in perfect silence. He saw the already dim room growing ever darker around him. He became less conscious of his surroundings and more aware of himself. His introspection grew but his body was now moving automatically, softly cycling through a short loop of set motions. He noticed dust under his feet, and soon the realisation reached him that he was slowly wearing a shallow hole in the wooden floor. His body was locked in an efficient cycle. Before too long he was six inches below floor level, his head parallel with some of the shorter dancers. Yet he could not stop. Gradually he sank deeper into the ground until his face was level with people’s waists. No one noticed, below the eye level of the crowd, he was almost invisible. Presently his eyes came level with the soles of dancing shoes. He could see shards of coloured light flashing through a forest of legs casting jagged shapes across the floor. There were points where soft reflected light shone through looming figures like sunlight into a clearing. Eventually he was entirely submerged. He could look up through the hole and see foreshortened bodies moving above him oblivious to his plight. Still his feet moved, wearing away damp, pungent earth. The vibrations from the music lessened until the dull thump of the kick drum was all that he could feel. When it stopped he realised he too was still, and looking up he saw the sphere of light was gone.

One would like architecture to be a stable ground, a fixed set. But behind the certainty of a brick wall or a concrete slab stands the uncertainty of its use, its life, its inhabitation, its domestication. Impossible to predict, this softness invites us to think architecture as a frame, an open structure, a malleable playground.
Paper is a newspaper focusing on Common places in Beijing. Paper investigates the multiple forms of inhabitation at the smallest scale, as accidents within a given structure. Paper focuses on the non-monuments constitutive of the city of Beijing. It unfolds 43 photographs taken in Dong-Cheng District, and a bilingual text in English and Chinese. Paper was firstly launched on the 27th of October during a solo show exhibition 'Common places' at the Institute for Provocation.

Seit seinem ersten Selfie 1972 auf dem Set von "Der Kommissar" mit Erik Ode jagt der Autogrammjäger und meist beschäftigte Statist des deutschen Films und Fernsehens, Wolfgang Maier, akribisch und ohne Unterlass dem neuesten Foto mit VIPs aus Politik, Sport und Showbusiness hinterher. Er kann damit als Erfinder des neuen Massenphänomens der sozialen Medien gelten. Die Ausstellung zeigt eine Auswahl seiner Guinness-Buch-der-Rekorde-verdächtigen Sammlung von über 100.000 Schnappschüssen, die er in über 560 Mappen in chronologischer Reihenfolge dokumentiert, zusammen mit den über 900 Auftritten als Komparse in deutschen Filmen und Fernsehserien.

Thanks to the artist researcher and activist Joanna Wong, I have been well informed of the situation in Hong Kong since the beginning of the movement. So when I saw the Hyperallergic article about the protest zines gathered and distributed by the artist collective Zine Coop, I thought people in Paris should know about this. The exhibition Freedom Hi! happened in many places in the world, I welcomed it at 本 \hon\ books. To cover the cost production of the exhibition, I decided to make a catalogue box set of 19 zines, with an index of all them and an interview of one of ZineCoop founders Forrest Lau.
Dank der Forscherin und Aktivistin Joanna Wong bin ich über die Situation in Hongkong seit dem Beginn der Bewegung gut informiert. Als ich also den Hyperallergic-Artikel über die vom Künstlerkollektiv Zine Coop gesammelten und verteilten Protest-Zines sah, dachte ich, dass die Menschen in Paris davon wissen sollten. "THREE HOURS BETWEEN PLANES" — kuratiert von Marco Poloni (Chicago) und Eiko Grimberg (Leipzig) — zeigt Arbeiten elf amerikanischer und deutscher Künstler, die sich im weitesten Sinne mit fotografischen Medien beschäftigen. Alle beteiligten Künstler haben ihr Studium an der School of the Art Institute of Chicago bzw. der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig absolviert, beides Orte mit einer umfangreichen fotografischen Ausbildungstradition.
Beidseits des Atlantiks stellt sich die Frage, in wieweit Spuren der Realität innerhalb eines Bildes noch erfasst werden können. Eröffnet sich hierbei nicht vielmehr ein Feld, in dem sich der Künstler in die Rolle eines performativen Vermittlers versetzt sieht oder beginnt er sich in der Mehrdeutigkeit der Bilder einzunisten? Der Impuls, Momente des Realen zu produzieren und zu dokumentieren — oder vielmehr, Situationen zu generieren, um das Reale in Erscheinung treten zu lassen, ist ein konstantes Thema der Ausstellung. Dabei bestimmt der Rückgriff auf die eigene Biografie und Lebenswelt als zu formendes Material genauso die Ausstellung, wie ein diskursiver Umgang mit den formalen Bedingungen des fotografischen Mediums. Die Ausstellung „Die Aussenseiterbande“ umfasst künstlerische Positionen, deren gedankliche Ressourcen nicht unbedingt aus der Bildenden Kunst stammen: Queerness und topografische Bipolarität, Konfrontation mit Staatsgewalt, ein unerfülltes Dasein als Social Media Star oder Realitätsverlust in einem digitalen Metaversum.
Felix Burger stellt eine Ausstellung mit international agierenden und Münchner Künstler*innen zusammen, und bittet sie, ihre Wünsche, Ängste und unerfüllten Träume in den Galerieräumen zu artikulieren.
„Für Aussenseiterbande bediene ich mich keinem konzeptionellen-kuratorischen Überbau, sondern nehme mir, was mir gefällt. Das beginnt beim Titel - geklaut bei Jean-Luc Godard - und zieht sich durch mein Künstler*innen Set-up. Es sind Personen, die mich schon lange begleiten, mit denen ich selbst studiert habe, die ich aus meiner Zeit im Rheinland oder in den Niederlanden kenne oder die ich später als Künstlerischer Mitarbeiter und Professor betreuen durfte. Ich finde den Arbeitsansatz aller Ausstellenden beeindruckend, weil er authentisch, sperrig und eigenartig ist. Es sind reale Personen, die sich für reale Dinge faszinieren und diese mit Inbrunst artifiziell verwursten.“ - Felix Burger

Ein Tag, der dem Verlegen unter der Leitung von Künstlern gewidmet ist. 22 Künstler, die mit dem Medium Buch arbeiten, stellen ihre Publikationen vor. Unser Gast an diesem Tag ist Eleanor Vonne Brown, die über "Publikation als Praxis" sprechen wird. Eleanor Vonne Brown ist eine unabhängige Verlegerin, die in London lebt. Sie gründete 2008 "X Marks the Bökship", eine Buchhandlung und einen Projektraum für Kleinveröffentlichungen von Künstlern und Designern. Hier förderte sie das zeitgenössische Verlagswesen durch Buchvorstellungen, Veranstaltungen und Produktionsressourcen, welche einzelne Akteure zusammenbrachten, um eine lokale Verlagsgemeinschaft zu schaffen. Sie leitete die Vortragsreihe "Publikation als Praxis" über Konzepte von Künstlerbüchern. Zu ihren jüngsten Projekten gehören das "Post Internet Cafe" im PrintRoom, Rotterdam, und das Audio-Publishing-Projekt "The Cast of the Crystal Set" in der Matt's Gallery.

Doch an den Wänden hängen überall risogedruckte Poster von neon-orangenem €-Zeichen, von den Decken hängen Neonröhren herab. In einem Nebenzimmer spielt eine DJ ein stimmungsvolles Set, neben einer feinen Bar mit freien Drinks. Das Überangebot wird auf die Spitze getrieben.
Oft bewegt man sich ganz alleine durch eine Ausstellung, und bleibt ahnungslos vor nicht immer sofort zugänglichen Kunstwerken stehen. Doch bei dieser Vernissage erwarten die Besucherinnen (m/w/d) Botschafter – Herren in Anzügen –, die bereitstehen, um den Gästen dabei zu helfen, die subtilen Botschaften der Kunstwerke zu entdecken. Ein Überangebot erfordert Anleitung, um seine Attraktivität wiederherzustellen.

The books from the Kaldewey Press are important documents of contemporary bookmaking that have been featured in exhibitions all over the world. Since the 1985 founding of his handpress, which Gunnar A. Kaldewey set up in Poestenkill, in upstate New York, over sixty unique artist books have been produced in cooperation with artists such as Jonathan Lasker, Mischa Kuball, or Richard Tuttle. Among the authors are famous names such as Samuel Beckett, Paul Celan, Marguerite Duras, and James Joyce. Published in small limited editions, the books are produced according to the highest level of craftsmanship. Kaldewey does the typesetting and prints the books, sometimes making the paper himself, too. The bookbinding is done by renowned workshops such as Christian Zwang's in Hamburg, or Jean de Gonet's in Paris.

´Lightears´ is the long awaited debut album by Berlin duo Leo Mars. After a year of trial and error, a lot of sessions, sound collecting and analysation of possibilities a precisely crafted, yet astonishingly free floating album came to life. In times of almost infinite sounds, instruments and styles it took the duo some time to come up with the basic material, form a language and then of course learn to speak it. Hours were spent in the studio and their favourite lebanese restaurant discussing the world of sound.
´Lightears´ intelligently smudges the borders between a classic drone, an underground noise, a playful improvisation and an old fashion musique concrete record. All the genres fall into place rather unpretentious with pure sound excitingly assembled to challenge ones listening habits.
It is a rather harsh production always bouncing back and forth between digital, crisp electronics and field recordings pushed way over the edge.
With minimal gear and set up Leo Mars managed to manoveur themselves somewhere inbetween a bedroom thrashing noise keyboard project and a theoratical paper score composer duo. Performing in a trance - allowing things to happen - awaken - making a conscious decision - slipping back into space

This book was published in conjunction with Foerster’s on-site installation in a vacant lot in Miami [May, 17, 2012], put on by the New York gallery Shoot the Lobster. A conversation between Foerster and the show’s curator, Bob Nickas, is included in the book and offers insight into the artist’s process and experience with the project. The show emphasized the placement of printing plates and photographic paper in the lot and their interaction with the environment. This is highlighted by the photographs featured in the book, which document objects from the show, as well as its visitors and surroundings.

From November 25 to December 26, 2014, it was possible to see a sculpture by the New York artist Ryan Foerster hung on a drink vendor's stand on a street in Saigon. In an extreme economy, the cost of this project, US$ 20, is equal to the salary offered to the street vandor to hang the artwork for a one-month period. The event happened without any publicity, leaving the artwork for public view without advertisement and stirring the curiosity of pasersby.
This experience, an idea of the gallerist José Martos, can be recreated in different contexts, always with the aim of asking questions about the status of the artwork and its autonomy, the exhibition and its form.

Burger verwandelte den ehemaligen Industriekomplex in eine Wunderkammer voll absurder Weltentwürfe. Singende Puppen, verwaiste Zirkusartisten, kleine Männer, sprechende Hunde, belehrende Eisbären und debile Priester besetzten das Gebäude. Die fast 5000qm große Ausstellungsfläche wurde zum begehbaren Bühnenbild und in sich geschlossenem Mikrokosmos. Neben seinem monografischen Werk wurden auch Kollaborationen mit Lion Bischof, Böhler & Orendt und Otakar Skala, Sophia Süßmilch gezeigt.
The book documents Felix Burger’s exhibition project »Medizinisch Psychologische Untersuchung« in Brutus, Rotterdam from April 5 to June 23, 2024.
Burger transformed the former industrial complex into a chamber of wonders full of absurd world concepts. Singing puppets, orphaned circus performers, little men, talking dogs, lecturing polar bears and moronic priests occupied the building. The almost 5000 square meter exhibition space became a walk-in stage set and a self-contained microcosm. In addition to his monographic work, collaborations with Lion Bischof, Böhler & Orendt and Otakar Skala, Sophia Süßmilch were also shown.

Im Mittelpunkt der Videoinstallation "The Broken Pitcher" steht ein Ereignis in Zypern 2019: In einer Bankfiliale in Larnaka verhandelt eine Familie über die Zwangsvollstreckung ihres Einfamilienhauses. Der Ausgang des Gesprächs bleibt offen, scheint jedoch wenig aussichtsreich für die Betroffenen. Zwangsvollstreckungen gehörten zu den Maßnahmen, welche die Troika aus Vertretern der Europäischen Kommission, der Europäischen Zentralbank und des Internationalen Währungsfonds der zyprischen Regierung in der Folge der Wirtschaftskrise ab 2012 verordneten. Die Situation der hier dargestellten Familie steht stellvertretend für viele andere.
Die Videoarbeit besteht aus einem ersten Teil, in dem der Banktermin von Schauspieler*innen nachgestellt wird. Ein spekulativer Nachbau des Bankraums, der auf Grundlage der Gedächtnisnotizen der Familie konzipiert wurde, dient als Set und wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Gruppe von Künstler*innen entwickelt. Jeder Gegenstand im Raum ist ein Kunstwerk, das der Begegnung beiwohnt und die Möglichkeit einer anders gelagerten Realität aufblitzen lässt. Inspiriert von Abbas Kiarostamis Film "Erster Fall, zweiter Fall" (1979, Iran) reagieren im zweiten Teil des Videos verschiedene interviewte Personen auf das Reenactment. Ihre Antworten spiegeln Perspektiven auf das international verbreitete Problem der Immobilienspekulation und resultierender Verschuldung wider: von Interessengruppen aus Zypern, Mietaktivist*innen aus Barcelona, Berlin und Beirut, von Menschen, die Ähnliches erlebt haben sowie von Anwält*innen, Ökonom*innen und Künstler*innen.
"The Broken Pitcher" setzt auf Zusammenarbeit und Dialog. Es verhandelt die Frage, wie das Finanzsystem funktioniert und wie man in dessen Abläufe eingreifen und diese verändern könnte. In München wird die Arbeit zwischen Juni und August 2023 an mehreren Abenden im öffentlichen Raum gezeigt. Anschließend an die Vorführungen gibt es Zeit für Austausch.
